Welcome to Genre Days!

For the next couple of weeks, the IH ladies will be entertaining you with snippets from all the many, many different genres in which we write! Today, we’re kicking off the festivities with PARANORMAL books. Sit back and enjoy!

LEXXIE COUPER

Ohhh, I love paranormal romances. The mystery, the danger, the demons, the fur… *grin* This snippet is from Death, the Vamp and his Brother, a rather interesting tale about desire, the Grim Reaper, surfing vampires and the up-coming Apocalypse.

The Apocalypse can’t stop desire like this…can it?

Death exists for one purpose and one purpose only: to sever the life-threads of the living. She does her job with pride and an unwavering commitment. Nothing ruffles her. Until she encounters Patrick Watkins. The Australian lifeguard pushes all her buttons—and makes her tailbone itch like crazy. And when her tailbone itches, it means trouble is brewing. Big trouble.

Ven’s gut tells him that Death is taking aim at his kid brother. He should know—he died and was turned vampire while trying to prevent another failed murder-attempt eighteen years ago. Patrick is meant to do something important in the world, and Ven will do anything to keep him safe. Even take on Death herself. In more ways than one.

As far as Patrick’s concerned, the whole thing is a load of bull. But what if everything Death tells him turns out to be true? How is he expected to save mankind from the worst fate of all—the Apocalypse? Especially when all he can think about is how quickly he’s falling in love with the most feared Horseman of them all…

Warning: This book contains enough heresy to shame the Devil, more scorching sex than one person can handle, Oh, and lots of Australian colloquialism. A bloody lot of Australian colloquialism.

Excerpt

Fred noticed three things straight away. Patrick Watkins was looking directly at her, he was stark naked and he was semi-aroused.

By the Powers, he’s huge.

“Who the hell are you?”

His deep, angry growl made her jump. She stared at his face—his face, Fred, his face—her mouth dry. “You can see me!”

“Of course, I can see you. And I saw you at the beach today.” Sharp green eyes narrowed. “What the fuck did you do to my drowning victim?”

Fred clenched her jaw, giving the human before her a level look. “For your information, your drowning victim was a pedophile.”

A shimmer of disgust ignited in Patrick Watkins’ dark green eyes before he clenched his own jaw. “Mr. Peabody was alive until you touched him.”

Fred cocked her head to the side, trying like hell to ignore the fact that the man seemed to have forgotten he was naked—and still partially erect. Ignore it? How do you ignore something that impressive? “Yes, I must say, you did a very good job resurrecting him from his initial passing. But it was his time and no interference, no matter how skilled or stubborn, would have saved him.”

Patrick’s eyes widened. “Interference? His time?” Anger flared in his unwavering stare. “Who the fuck are you? The Grim Reaper?”

Fred inclined her head slightly. “Just call me Fred.”

“Well, Fred.” Patrick took a step toward her, the anger in his face growing dark. Menacing. “I’d saved him. I don’t care how bloody sexy you are, or who you think you are, he was alive until you touched him. What the hell did you do to him?”

Fred’s heart stopped for a split second, before pounding triple-time. Sexy? A grin stretched her lips and a wild flutter erupted between her thighs. He thought she was sexy.

He also thinks you’re a murderer.

She pulled a face, crossing her arms across her chest. Her nipples brushed against her forearms, sending a little jolt of damp electricity into the pit of her belly and she bit back a curse. How was it possible this one mortal male made her so horny? “I really can’t explain it all to you,” she snapped, irked by her body’s irrational response and Patrick Watkins’ not-so-irrational agitation. “Just know Peabody is in a much more deserving place now he’s gone.”

Patrick cocked an eyebrow. “So, what? You’re a vigilante?”

Fred ground her teeth. “As I’ve already said, I can’t explain it.”

“Try. Before I call the cops.”

Fred couldn’t help herself. She burst out laughing. “The cops?”

Black anger flashed across Patrick’s face. “Look, love, you’ve got exactly twenty seconds to give me an answer, or I’ll knock you on your arse, tie you to the bed and let the authorities deal with you when they get here.”

A hot, wet wave of sinful pleasure rolled through Fred at the idea of Patrick Watkins tying her to the bed. Damn. She’d never gone down that path of sexual gratification before, but the Australian lifeguard made her body fantasize about all sorts of things it hadn’t before. All of them very, very wicked. “Patrick Watkins,” she said, unable to stop her gaze roaming over his naked body. “I would like nothing more than to see you try.”

Another wave of fury—and something else far more primitive—charged his expression. “Okay. If that’s the way it’s going to be.”

He moved. Much quicker than Fred expected. Much quicker than any human should. One moment he stood glaring at her from beside his bedroom door, the next he was slamming her against the wall, his fingers locked around her wrists, his hips rammed into hers.

Immediate and absolute pleasure tore through her. Dark, intoxicating, submissive pleasure. Her sex constricted, her breath caught in her throat. She’d never been handled so. Even her Roman had treated her with kid gloves, like he’d been too scared of her to truly show how much she’d aroused him. Patrick Watkins however, knew no reason to be scared of her. And it made her sex flood with cream.

By the Powers, she wanted to fuck him and be fucked by him.

The licentious thought whipped through her head and, before she knew what was going on, her jeans, boots and t-shirt vanished. Leaving her just as naked as the man pressing her against the wall with his hard body.

He froze, his fingers digging into her wrists, his cock grounding against her belly. “What. The fuck. Is going on?”

BIANCA D’ARC

It just so happens, I’ve got a new paranormal novel coming out on April 17th. Yay! So I’m going to give you guys a little sneak peek at a brand new novel in the Brotherhood of Blood series. It’s called WOLF HILLS. Here’s a little bit about it, and a small excerpt:

Wolf HillsDanger prowls on two legs…

Sally Decker is a big city police detective vacationing in Wyoming to visit an old friend who is newlywed to a mysterious foreigner. When Sally arrives in Wyoming, she quickly learns that her friend’s new husband is the Master Vampire of the region and there’s a werewolf Pack living just up the road.

Jason Moore is an Alpha on a mission. When he sees Sally for the first time, he knows there’s something special about her. He’s drawn to her and makes it his business to be her tour guide. He invites her to take her meals at the Pack house, in his company, not realizing his favoritism is going to wreak havoc among the single females in his Pack. But Sally can handle just about anything, including any werewolf bitch stupid enough to challenge her.

When werewolf children are targeted by evil hunters in the area, Sally refuses to sit on the sidelines. She helps the Alpha hunt the perps and free a child they’ve kidnapped, facing bombs, bullets and a lusty Alpha along the way. Unexpected allies and devastating attraction turn the rescue mission into a mating dance between Jason and Sally, who learns she’s not entirely human. His magic sparks against hers, creating something entirely new and totally hot between the two. Will fate help them bridge the chasm between their separate worlds?

Excerpt (c) 2012 Bianca D’Arc

“What can I do for you, Mistress?”

Carly shot him a warning look that Sally didn’t miss. Oh, yes, there was something funny going on here. Sally decided to be more amused than alarmed. The alcohol she’d already consumed could have something to do with her mellow mood, of course.

“Detective Decker needs another drink. Why don’t you take her over to the bar and see what you can mix up?”

“As you wish.” Seth turned a downright wolfish grin on Sally. It would have been exciting if he weren’t so young. Too young for her, if truth be told, though he was one of the older folks in the room. It seemed like all of Carly’s new employees were still wet behind the ears.

Still, she let him take her arm and lead her to the other side of the large living room, where a fully stocked bar was tucked into one corner. He was polite enough and handsome as sin, but he just didn’t do anything for her. Although he was nice to look at. Definitely eye candy of the first order.

The selection of wines behind the bar was truly impressive. There was even a refrigerator-sized chiller with a frosted glass door just for the stuff. Sally recognized a few of the labels as coming from Atticus Maxwell’s winery and thought fondly of her friend Lissa, who had married the vintner not too long ago. She’d been to their house for drinks a few weeks back and was amazed by the opulent manor house and extensive vineyard. Marc LaTour and her friend Kelly had dropped by as well and the two blissfully happy couples had made Sally feel welcome. It had been a nice change from feeling like a third wheel among her police colleagues and their spouses.

Seth was good company. He teased her with a confidence you didn’t often find in someone his age while he mixed her drink of choice like an old pro. Not one for wine, she’d opted for a piña colada when Seth had offered to make a frozen one for her. She’d agreed more or less just to see if he could do it and he’d surprised her, drawing a crowd when the blender switched on.

A few of the other women were lining up for a slushy drink of their own when Sally noticed the front door open. Carly was there, greeting the most brutally handsome man Sally had ever seen. He reached out and grabbed her attention simply by entering the room. She knew she was staring, but was powerless to stop herself.

“Who is that?” she asked as Seth deposited the frosty glass full of frozen drink in her hand.

At her side, Seth visibly gulped. “That’s the Alpha.”

Excerpt from Unseen Path:

She sighed and wrapped around him.

“We aren’t finished yet.”

She looked back at him. “What do you mean?”

“You and I aren’t finished.”

“There is more to the ritual?”

“No, that part is done. You and I are now mated. I mean that we went too fast and I don’t like fast. This time we take it slow.”

She felt herself stop breathing as he flipped her over and settled back on top of her.

“The last two times we rushed. This time, I’m going to really enjoy myself and you are, too.”

She shuddered and licked her lips, not saying a word. He bent down, capturing her tongue before she could draw it back into her mouth. She went with it and allowed him to bring her in. The kiss started soft and slow, but turned deep and passionate. His hands started to explore her body as he released her mouth, kissing his way to her neck so he could nibble and suck. Moving his way down to her breast, never touching her where she needed to be touched. “Please–”

“I said slow and I meant it. You can’t make me rush this. You don’t know how long I’ve waited. You were in my mind before I met you and now I get to taste you. I want to savor it.”

She moaned. He licked his way around her nipple, round and round, causing her to squirm until he finally took her into his mouth, suckling her, drawing her in deep. Then he bit her, making her hips jerk off the bed. He moved to her other breast, still taking his time, he nibbled his way to her other nipple. By now, Molli thrashed on the bed. “I can’t, I can’t–”

He paused for a second, “You can and you will.”

RHIAN CAHILL

I love shifters. So it came as no real surprise when I started a series about them. Although the fact they were coyotes and not wolves was a little different but I went with it and I’m so glad I did. I love ever one of the Coyote Hunger books but Brogan, the hero from Coyote Wild is still my favorite. Click any of the covers about to find out more about each book. But before you go here’s a little of Brogan.

Book Two in the Coyote Hunger series.

Brogan Wilder knows all about animal urges. As a coyote shifter, he’s lived with them all his life but he’s never experienced the bone-deep hunger Eloise Crawford elicits. Claiming a mate is one thing. Claiming one who’s human and has no idea shifters exist is another matter altogether. In El, he’s found his destiny. Now he just has to convince her they are meant to be together.

A visit to help her best friend with wedding plans seems like just the kind of relaxation El is after. But once she arrives, there’s nothing relaxing about the reaction she has to her friend’s brother. Suddenly her senses are on high alert and she’s drawn to him in a way she finds nothing short of terrifying. But there’s more to this man than his golden eyes and magical touch. There’s something else. Something not exactly human.

Accepting her fate should have been the difficult part, but when El finds herself the target of an outraged pack member, the true struggle begins.

EXCERPT:

Brogan had never been more thankful for his quick reflexes than now. El had barely begun the slide to the floor before he had his arm around her waist and her body snug against his. He looked over her head at Rowan.

“She fainted,” he said.

The astonishment on Rowan’s face mirrored his. Her mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.

“Did that ever happen with you and Quinn?” he asked.

“Once, but that was during a joining, not from just a touch.” Quinn’s quiet words came from behind him.

Brogan looked over his shoulder. “Is this normal?”

“Probably. You had some serious vibes going on before, but when her hand connected with you the heat just about singed my eyebrows.” Quinn reached over and checked El’s pulse.

Brogan knew her heart raced but it had slowed since she fainted. He altered his grip, scooted his arm behind her knees and swung her up against his chest. She couldn’t weigh a hundred pounds, her bones were slight and there was a small amount of padding in all the right places. She was such a little thing. How could she possibly hold up against him?

The fear of what his strength could do to her sliced through him. How could he possibly hope not to hurt her? His needs were wild, and his need for her was greater than any he’d known. Arms trembling, he turned to face Quinn.

“She’s so tiny.” His words quaked with the anxiety exploding in his mind.

“Don’t underestimate her, Brogan. El is tiny in stature but huge in courage,” Rowan said.

“Rowan’s right. Her inner strength is what you need to worry about and she’s more than proven herself over the years they spent together.”

He stared at Quinn, hoping he was right. Needing him to be right.

“Did you give her the back room? I’ll take her up and sit with her until she comes around.” At Quinn’s nod Brogan stepped toward the door.

“No. I’ll sit with her. I don’t think her waking up with you in the room is a good idea.” Rowan’s soft footsteps followed him.

He knew she was right but he wanted to stay with El. No, what he really wanted was to take her to his room, lock the door and not let her out until she’d accepted who he was. Rushing things wouldn’t get him anywhere, but the need to get there now warred with his need to protect her.

Rowan scooted around him and led the way upstairs. Entering the bedroom had his senses tingling. Every part of the room felt touched by El. Her scent lingered in the air and her warmth filled all the corners. In less than two hours she’d stamped her claim on more than just him.

When Rowan pulled the covers back he lowered El’s inert body to the bed, together they removed her shoes. She’d be more comfortable with her clothes off but he doubted she’d be happy waking up naked, especially with him in the room. There was no way he was leaving her no matter how much his sister protested.

He sat on the bed at El’s hip and brushed the hair from her face. They didn’t pull the covers over her as the central heating kept the room warm and he didn’t want her to overheat. Her face still looked flushed but her forehead was cool to his touch.

“You can go now, Brogan. I’ll sit with her,” Rowan murmured.

“I’m staying.”

His sister chose not to argue, whether from the tone of his voice or the distraction of worrying about El, he didn’t care. He wasn’t leaving until she woke.

  1. Julianne Says:

Paranormal is one of my favorite genres. I love vampires, shape shifters, demons, witches. There is so much an author can do with a paranormal book. It’s so neat to read all the different takes authors have on some of the same things, like vampires. You can read 40 vampire books and they’d all be different to some extent because of being written by different authors. These are some wonderful covers, very sexy. I really enjoyed reading the excerpts, they were great.

  2. Paranormals are one of my favorite genres. I love the variety of character types: vampires, shifters, demons, angels, etc. Each author is able to created the world and characters that they want, limited only about their imaginations. Each one is different, nothing is impossible. The characters are often alphas, a little dangerous, and are very sexy.

  3. courtneyslater Says:

I love paranormal romances. Thanks for sharing such good looking excerpts with us.

  4. Paranormal is my go-to genre, and I especially love shifters, but I’ll devour just about anything – vamps, cyborgs, aliens, were-animals and/or humans with extra-ordinary abilities. I love when an author can make a fictional world believable. The excerpts have given me some great books to add to my TBR!

  5. I am a scifi/fantasy geek at heart and because of that paranormal has a lot of what I like. 🙂

  6. caitymack Says:

I have a particular fondness for paranormal storylines. Love the creative world building, and the endless possibilities for character traits and romantic connections. Plus the paranormal world gives me some very memorable alpha heroes and heroines (my favorite).

Immersing myself in a fabulous paranormal story is the ultimate escape for me, and what I reach for most from my book shelf.

Even after endless years of reading, I find that I can still be surprised, and I love that.

  7. I love paranormal. Picking to use coyotes over wolves is different. I was picturing a wolf even though it said coyotes, until you started to say you picked them over wolves, then it clicked in my head.. Yes sometimes my brain doesn’t work quite right. All of the books sound good though I only own Coyote Home, it’s in my ebook TBR.

  8. Bianca I can’t wait for Sally’s story. I’ve read the Brotherhood series at least a dozen times and I always wanted Sally to get her own story. 🙂 April 17th can’t come any sooner.

  9. Regina Ross Says:

I love reading paranormal books, thanks for sharing the excerpts 🙂

  10. I am new to the paranormal genre. So far I have read a few Vampire books and a few Wolf books. I have a couple of demon and angel books , but I haven’t started them yet. Slowly making my way through my TBR list.

  11. PNR and Romantic Suspense are tied as my favorite romance sub-genres. I love PNR because the author gets to make up their own rules. PNR heroes get away with extreme behavior that would otherwise label them as jerks in a contemporary romance. I love extremely dominant Alpha heroes and they fit perfectly in a PNR. My favorite PNR creature would be a wolf shifter. Talk about Alpha!

  12. nancyg5997 Says:

The only book here that I haven’t devoured is Bianca’s upcoming release. Lexxie knows I adore her work, Jambrea knows how I feel about the Silar books, and Rhian has seen the way I grab her Coyote books. I love all of the IH authors, but I have a special fondness for paranormal, and I have all of Bianca’s books so far.

  13. JoAnna B Says:

Paranormal romance is my favorite genre. I will read other romance genres of course but my book shelves are full of shifter, vampires, demon, etc. I will be adding a few of these to my book shelf. Thanks for all the excerpts.

  14. MicheleAnn Oboyle Says:

i think paranormal genere are the best group of writers around my hubsnad tells me that i read way to many vampire novels but trouble is each vampire novel that i have read none two are like and each one is different in some sort of way. so paranormal books rocks

  15. I love paranormal romances. I have loved paranormal stories since i was a kid and have glommed them most of my life. they were super hard to find until about 10 year ago, so I am enjoying the swing in this direction in romance while it lasts. 🙂
My fav sub-genres for this are probably shifters and psychic abilities.

  16. Paranormal romance is my favorite genre! I just stumbled into them a few years ago and now can’t get enough of them! I LOVED reading all of the excerpts and ogling at the awesome covers! Thx for having me at your super cool event! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings! 🙂

  17. I really enjoy paranormal romances. I love all the action and the hot guys. lol Shifters and Vampires are some of my absolute favorites.

  18. Paranormal is my top genre. Love Biancas books and look forward to trying the others!

  19. I really like paranormals. I love all of the different options you get so that every story can be completely different and not sound like the same old thing with different names. Authors have unlimited possibilities and I love exploring them all.

    musicalfrog at comcast.net

  20. While I love the romance genre it’s the paranormal romance that is my absolute favorite! While I consider myself a vamp girl I have recently found a great love for shifters as well. Angel, demon, vamp, shifter, or ghost I love it all! Thank you xoxox

  21. Paranormal is my favorite genre, with shifters right up there at the top of my favs.

Many Thanks to Bianca D’Arc for her dragon shifter books. Because of her, dragons are my favorite shifters. No one has come close to her in the world of dragon shifters. Looking forward to the new book in the Brotherhood of Blood series.

Also thanks to Rhian Cahill for her coyote shifters. They were a new type of shifter for me and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

Lexxie Couper, your books always put a smile on my face. You have a gift and I appreciate it.

Jambrea Jo Jones. I have not read any of your books, so if you like, you can pick me to win one of your books. LOL

Thanks to the dirty dozen for you amazing talent and for sharing it with us mundanes of the world.

    reneebennett35(at)yahoo(dot)com

  22. Excellent excerpts. Love those shifters

  23. I’m a big fan of paranormal romance now, partly because all of you write it so well! When I first started reading romance, I wouldn’t touch paranormal with a 10-foot pole–I found the relationship complexities sufficient to keep my interest in a story. It isn’t so much that “ordinary” romance are no longer enough, but I’ve come to appreciate the extra flair that the paranormal elements bring. Thanks for the amazing excerpts! I’ve happily devoured a couple of those alreaady!

  24. Katherine Says:

Ya’ll are writing too many good books! Dammit! I can’t afford all these. 😀 (Such a good problem to have.)

I’ve only started reading PNR in the last year. And they are growing on me. I thought I was over vamps, but keep finding new twists on the idea. And shifters – well, well, well – some very hot ideas in shifter novels.

    Keep ’em coming, ladies!

  25. Im a huge fan of paranormal romances. Each book is different, unique, the creatures are all different. I love it! And the plots…different worlds, dimensions, planets. With each book, i never know what im going to get and nothing is ever expected. 🙂
