Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Me – Aleksandr Voinov

1. I studied history because of Sir Walter Scott’s “Ivanhoe”. I just wanted to be able to write about the Templars without making too many mistakes. Still took me eight years after finishing my studied before I did write a Templar story.

2. My first car was a silver-grey VW Golf, Turbo Diesel. It was ancient, but it ran and ran, and ran. While I had it, I was involved in three crashes, but none were my fault. These days, I don’t drive (there’s really no point in London.)

3. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a fire fighter, policeman, archaeologist, egyptologist, lawyer, pharmacist (yes, really), ninja, soldier, and a writer. Guess which one worked out. Hieroglyphs were just too damn hard, and I kept falling asleep in law lectures.

4. My favourite colour is teal, yet nothing in my study is teal-coloured. (That sucks. I’ll have to change that.)

5. I only sing along to the music on my headphones when I’m alone at home. (Because, let’s face it, my guy would get the wrong ideas if he could hear me singing Judas Priest’s “Love You To Death”, like right now.)

6. I’m a Bejewelled and Tetris addict. It’s so bad that I had to delete them both from my computer (and my smartphone). Now, if I could find a way to block all Bejewelled and Tetris websites…

7. I pretty much spent the years 1993-2005 roleplaying, either around a table, or dressed up (usually as a warrior of some description), or online. It’s a miracle I somehow worked three jobs and finished university and even wrote some books.

8. I love giving pens (from fountain pens to nice quality rollerballs) as gifts to writers. (Probably because I just love buying them. Some people buy a million ties, I buy pens.)

9. I could live anywhere in the world (as long as it’s in the temperate zone), but I really need something medieval around me to be happy. There’s just that whiff of history that says “home” to me.

10. I almost never remember dreams (maybe like twice per year). The closest I get to dreaming is just before I fall asleep, but by the time I wake up, it’s all gone. This is especially weird because my partner is a lucid dreamer who always remembers and can always remember his dreams. That’s one thing I’d love to be able to do, because I just know I’m dreaming and with my muse and subconsciousness, I’m probably doing some really cool and interesting stuff at night – I just can’t remember any of it.

I recently had my house painted & the picture rail that runs along each wall is TEAL. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Not during Halloween month.

  2. I had to delete all the games from my computers, smartphone, and iPads for the same reason. Slipped one time, but have since remained clean. There is no cure, the urge never goes away. Once a gaming addict, always a gaming addict. LOL Awesome list.

  3. I never remember dreams when I first awaken. And when I do recall them, it’s at the oddest moments, while taking a shower or driving to work…..

    Thanks,

  4. Indeed 10 things I didn’t know about you 🙂 You wanted to be a lot! A career as a ninja would have been cool too 😛

  5. Great post. Lol I’m a total tetris freak. I can’t have in on my computer either or I’d never do anything else. Darn little blocks anyway. Now all my computers have mahjong. I should probably remove that next…

  6. For me it was bubble shooter I had to delete. Just writing about it now makes my fingers twitch. Aaaargh …

  7. Mrs C Ellis Says:

I too never dream or at least remember any. Do you think it is the sign of a clear conscience…lol…A friend of mine who was a medium said perhaps I was an astral traveller so didn’t have time for dreams, especially as I get up sometimes with aching feet and body and scratches all over, I just wish I knew where I went to and what I’m doing to get so battered! I just hope I had fun!!

  8. They say if you want to remember your dreams, set your clock for ten minutes before you usually get up and then write down immediately whatever you remember. It works for me sometimes. 🙂

Gotta love Tetris!! It’s been awhile since I’ve played but I listen to the music on youtube…..yes I am an addict in withdrawal.

  10. Thanks for telling us some of your deep dark secrets. I too wanted to be so many exciting things when I was young, but then I realized how much of a weakling I am and that I’d never pass the test for those jobs.

I unfortunately remember my dreams, the good and the bad. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been killed by Dexter and lived to tell about it the next morning.

  13. Thanks for that, Aleks. Always nice to learn some more off-beat things about authors 🙂 And some how I’m not surprised by the 12 years of role playing.

  14. Very interesting! Like you, I almost never remember my dreams and I’m envious of people who do 🙂

  16. I go through game phases, but I seem to have a thing for variants of Mah Jongg.

After reading some of your books, warrior isn’t surprising in the least.

  17. I really enjoyed these tid-bits about you. When I was growing up I had an endless list of what I wanted to be. In a way I still do 🙂 It’s wonderful to have dreams and believe in them.

  18. My current addiction is angry birds… I have 2levels to finish… I should delete it but I can’t….

  19. Always interesting to learn such random things about other people!
And thanks for mentioning that song – never heard Judas Priest before! 😀
