There’s Something on Your Forehead

Oh wait, nevermind, it’s just Ash Wednesday.

I hope all the Catholics remembered to go get their Ash on (literally). Rituals are an important part of life, and without them there’d be no thrill or guilt from breaking them and THEN where would we be?

I can’t think about rituals, or religion, without thinking about why we all love the complex worlds of High Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy and Historicals (yep, you read that right). The rituals (which usually involve someone mating/marrying–this is Romance after all, and who doesn’t love the emotional roller coaster of two people trying to work out a must-marry situation) in those world give the characters something to rebel against, succumb to, be dutiful about, feel guilt about, and maybe accept.

I had some killer ritual-as-excuse-for-awesome-sex in Forbidden:

And in Gone with the Monster we got to see some of the Monster culture and rituals.

One of the reasons I personally am drawn to this is that my BA is in Anthropology. That’s the reason by bio includes blips about living in Turkey and Egypt. It’s also the reason I love writing. Telling a story is the oldest ritual mankind knows.

Anyone have a favorite ritual world, or favorite ritual to read about?

  1. Okay, your timing was perfect. I was just talking to one of the local Catholic deacons about services at the local church today. Of course, I missed the one at lunch time and won’t be able to attend the one this evening. Happy beginning of Lent.

I love most rituals in stories because they help define the society. Without rituals, how do you know what you’re suppose to do when? Mating rituals are usually the most entertaining…..just watch a bunch of teenage girls trying to get the attention of some boys who are trying to look cool and not notice the teenage girls they are too scared to talk to.

I am not sure about the whole ritual world lol. I for one love to read witch stories with them in it but yeah I don’t practice anything so…LOL.
