Lori Foster’s – here we come!

Posted in Valerie Tibbs on May 31, 2009 by maricarr

As you all might know (or not), 5 of us (Mari, Viv, RC, Jambrea, and me) here at International Heat will be attending the Lori Foster reader get together on June 5th.  Viv, Jambrea and I will be coming in on Thursday.

Last year, Jambrea and I only came for the booksigning on Saturday.  We had such a good time, that this year we decided there was NO WAY we were going to miss anything, so we are staying through Sunday morning!

I have started to pack – and for only being gone for three days, I have a full suitcase!  I always over pack.  Always.  I just never know if I’m going to need a dressy shirt, or will a t-shirt work?  What if I’m hot?  Or if I’m cold?  Do I bring a sweater?  I know it’s June, but some places have the a/c blasting away.  What if I’m a klutz (yes, that happens) and I spill something on me?  I will need a clean shirt. So, for three actual days – I have 6 shirts packed. A sweater – just in case.  Lounge pants for hanging around the hotel room.  I was tempted to bring my bathing suit, but I doubt we’ll have time to hang around in the pool.  I might bring it.  Just in case we have a pool party.  You never know!  So, on top of all the clothes, I have my cover art portfolio that I wanted to pitch to Samhain and Liquid Silver, my laptop – I don’t travel without it, and all the books I want signed.  Heh, it’s a good thing I’m driving!

For me it’s a 5 hour trip – but 6 really because I have time zone change in Indiana.  And I’ll pick up Viv in Indianapolis on the way to Cincinnati.  It’ll be fun to have someone to chat with the last couple of hours of the trip.  There are over 300 attendees this year, and I am looking forward to meeting all the authors and all my fellow readers.  I was fortunate enough to meet Jambrea – before she was a famous author – last year, and now I get to meet in person (finally!) Mari, Viv and RC.  I wish Lila and Jess would be able to make it, as well as Sherry and T.  Some year we’ll be able to coordinate all of our travel schedules and get together.

I’m thinking a trip to Barbados might be in order… Do we know anyone from there?
;)

Remember, we’re holding a ‘Stay at Home’ contest for those of you who can’t make it out. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post or the ones that follow until Sunday, June 7th.  On Monday, June 8th we will draw a winner! The more days you post, the better your chances of winning.

Friday Eve Snippet

Posted in Mari Carr on May 28, 2009 by maricarr

This snippet is sort of a two-fer deal. Jambrea Jo Jones and I have spent the last few months working on a little story we’re calling Speed Dating. Don’t know if that will be the official title, but it’s the working one. Jambrea is the diligent partner and I’m the slacker! We thought we’d share the part of the story where our couple, Gage (I’m write the hero) and Sunie (Brea writes the heroine) meet in a speed dating club.

“Um, hi. My name is Gage.”

“Hi Gage. It’s wonderful to meet you. I’m Sunday.”

“I’m afraid I’m kinda new at this whole speed dating concept. Is there something we’re supposed to be doing or saying or—” Gage shook his head, well aware of the fact that he sounded like a complete moron. He fully intended to kick Trey’s ass for dragging him into this joint.

“I’m really not sure. This is my first time as well. My friends talked me into this, something about needing to met a new kind of guy after my boyfriend and I broke up, but I guess that’s neither here nor there. I think we’re just supposed to talk and get to know each other a little. They don’t give us much time though, do they?”

“Um no, not really,” Gage wracked his brain to try to remember how long the hostess at the front door said he’d have to sit here and endure the awkward silence with this stranger. He studied the woman’s face, taken aback by her natural beauty. Excessive make-up was a major turn-off for him and it was refreshing to see that this woman—oh hell, what did she say her name was? Gage lost all track of his thoughts as he realized he hadn’t even listened when she’d introduced herself.

Christ, he sucked at this dating scene shit. The whole reason he’d gotten engaged to Bianca was because he wanted to escape all this nonsense. Get married. Have a family.

Name, he thought, what was her name?

“I was named after my dad.” He grimaced at the inane line. He sounded like a fucking fifth grader. “How ‘bout you?”

“I was named after the day I was born, but most people call me Sunie. I think it’s wonderful you were named after your dad. It shows strong tradition in your family and I think that’s very important nowadays. Don’t you?”

“Uh yeah.” He thought it showed a major lack of imagination and caused a heap of confusion at family gatherings, but whatever. At least, he’d remembered to listen this time. Her name was Sunie. He glanced at her face again and realized the name fit her somehow. “So what do you do for a living?”

“I don’t know if you would call it a job, as it’s more like a calling. I have my own practice. I’m a doctor of Natural Health. I’m a firm believer in using nature to help heal us. Being in tune with the world around us is a powerful thing. How about you? What do you do for a living?”

Doctor of Natural Health? What the hell was that? Sounded like some kind of hippie lifestyle. Shit, she probably lived on a commune. “I’m a doctor too—a vet. I run my own animal clinic a couple of blocks from here. So you prescribe like herbs or something?”

“If herbs are needed then I guess you could say I prescribe them. I teach my patients to worship their bodies so their minds and spirits become whole. Not to pollute themselves with unneeded medicines. Sometimes that means looking at what they’re eating, what kinds of stress they may have in their life. I was brought up to respect all life, do no harm and lead my patients to where they need to go. It’s very fulfilling, as I imagine it is for you being a veterinarian. I think that’s a wonderful career. I love animals. I’ve been thinking of getting a dog, but haven’t had a chance to go to the pound. I’m sorry. I’m talking too much, aren’t I?”

Gage grinned. He wasn’t sure he fully understood what it was she did for a living, but a fellow dog lover he could appreciate. “I’ve got two mutts of my own at home. They’d been abused and abandoned. Somebody picked them up and brought them into the clinic. Usually I try to find homes for neglected pets, but for some reason, I couldn’t let those two guys go. If you do pick up a dog, bring it by my clinic. I’ve got a deal worked out with the SPCA on spaying and neutering.”

“Oh, I don’t know if I would go with spaying or neutering. I wouldn’t want to hurt the animal. It’s great that you offer the service though and absolutely wonderful that you take in abused pets. I can’t believe anyone would hurt a creature as loving as a domesticated animal. I’m sorry. I tend to ramble when I’m nervous. Do you love what you do?”

What did she mean she wouldn’t spay or neuter? Gage took a minute to decide whether or not he wanted to call her to task on a subject he felt so strongly about. Then Bianca’s voice rang in his ears, telling him to get off his damn soapbox. The woman had always resented anything he felt passionately about that wasn’t her. He should have seen the writing on their relationship wall years ago. Gage mentally shrugged off Sunie’s comment. “I guess you could say I’m a regular guy. I love to watch sports on TV and I go hiking and kayaking whenever I get the chance. In the summer, I camp a couple times a month. How about—”

He was interrupted by a shrill bell and he watched as all the men in the club stood up. Apparently it was time to switch tables.

To hell with this, Gage thought. He caught Trey’s gaze, then glanced at the front door. He didn’t intend to play this game anymore. His stomach was in knots just trying to talk to Sunie and she was a perfectly, nice normal woman. Clearly he wasn’t ready to reenter the dating scene. He was hitting the pub across the street, watching the hockey game on the big screen TV that hung behind the bar and drinking beer with the guys. No stress, no bells, no women.

“It was nice to meet you Sunie. Have a good night.” Without a backward glance, he made his escape.

So–what do you think?

Two weeks left!?!?

Posted in Rhian Cahill on May 27, 2009 by RC

I can’t believe how quick it’s gone by but I’ve now been in the US for over a month and I’ve got just two weeks left! I’m sad. It seems like hardly any time at all and yet it feels like forever since I laid eyes on my babies. Okay, so they’re not exactly babies but you know what I mean. Hubby assures me they miss me but is he telling me that just so I don’t feel bad? Probably a bit of both. LOL

I guess this is where my life really starts to change because the eldest of my babies (we’ll call him Son#1) is 20 in November. He lives at home with his girl (Lady-in-waiting) and works full-time while studying full-time at an online university. He makes me feel very proud and very old.

My next baby will be 17 in November. Princess One acts so mature sometimes she make me feel like a three year old but she’s got her life planned out and is aiming to be a photographer. I’d like to say she gets her artistic talent from me but well, she’s way better than I am with a camera.

Baby #3 turned 15 on the 21st of April and let’s say that her nickname of Princess and the Pea is appropriate because she feels every little thing like it’s a huge blow. The girl has the biggest heart but when it’s that big it bruises that much easier. She’s the one I want to wrap in my arms and keep close forever. Yes, I’m a mother hen and I’ll peck your eyes out if you get too close.

That brings us to The Kid. He’ll be 13 in November (yes I see a pattern, we fixed it) and he’s everything a 13 year old boy should be. He’s the reason I have gray hair. No really, it has nothing to do with me being 40 last birthday.

Everyone says life begins at 40 and my year is a huge one. My babies are growing up, Hubby will also turn 40 later in the year and we’ll have been married for 21 years on the 14th of June. Plus we took the trip of a life time over here. I of course got to hang out longer but Hubby couldn’t take any more time off. As much as I’ve loved being here and meeting my CP’s (Mari and Viv), getting to meet friends like Nicole Austin, Annmarie McKenna and Mackenzie McKade to name a few, I’m starting to miss home. And home isn’t Singapore, it isn’t even my native Sydney, it’s where my family is.

As I wind down my stay in the US I know I’ll miss everyone here when I get home but not as much as I’ve missed the people that drive me insane on a daily basis. They’re the people who make me who I am and they’re the ones who’ve encouraged me and supported me on this trip to publication, even if it was with stars in their eyes about loads of money rolling in. LOL

There’s one more major event to my stay. The Lori Foster Reader and Author get together on the 5th, 6th and 7th of June. International Heat will have five of our eight members in attendance and we’d love to meet anyone who’d care to find us. We’ve put together a tote bag full of goodies for the raffle and we’ll also be running a staying at home contest (more details on that in a few days), so if you’re going don’t forget to say hi and if you’re staying home don’t forget to enter our contest. There’s something from all of us which means something from all over the world.

New Release

Posted in Mari Carr on May 26, 2009 by maricarr

norecourse-final1

No Recourse is now available at Liquid Silver! Came out just last night. This is the story of Hayley, a social worker from St. Louis, who is inexplicably transported back to regency England during a freak storm. While there she runs into the very arrogant, very alpha Captain Jack Campbell. The couple bickers constantly while attempting to find a lost woman, trying to discover the secret to returning Hayley to the future, battling against an evil earl and his henchmen, and most difficult of all, fighting their undeniable attraction to one another. Sparks seriously fly in this book! This is book one of the June Girls series. Book two, No Regrets, has also been contracted to Liquid Silver and I anticipate it will be released in the fall. Happy reading!
